Patricia A. Fernandes, 68

Hockessin, Del. – Patricia Ann Fernandes, 68, formerly of Hudson, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007 at her home.

She leaves her husband, Tony Fernandes; her father, John Rocco; her brother, Al Rocco and his wife, Christine; her children and their spouses, Mark and Lynn Fernandes, Gina Szymanski and her friend, Frank Miller, Amy Fernandes and her fiancé, John Timm, and John Fernandes; and her niece, Samantha Rocco.

A 1956 graduate of Hudson High School, Mrs. Fernandes retired in June 2005 from Delaware School for the Deaf after nearly 30 years of service as a paraprofessional.

She was first and foremost a mother and a wife. Second only to her devotion to her family was her devotion to her community. She served on the Lazarus Committee at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Hockessin and was a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader in the late '60s and early '70s. She spent much of her career helping and teaching people with various mental and physical disabilities. She volunteered her summers, more than 40 years, teaching two generations of Delaware children how to swim.

Mrs. Fernandes' faith and devotion to God was her inspiration to serve others less fortunate. She often shared one of her many talents by preparing spaghetti dinners for any organization that was in need of a good meal. She was an avid Red Sox fan and, oddly, a N.Y. Giants fan. She loved elephants, but not sunflowers, and was often asked to help celebrate weddings with her talents as a scrapbooking enthusiast. Kindness was reflected in the way she lived every day.

A mass of Christian burial was held Dec. 21 from St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Hockessin, with burial at All Saints Cemetery in Wilmington. The Chandler Funeral Home of Hockessin directed arrangement s. Memorial donations may be sent to Delaware School for the Deaf, 620 E. Chestnut Hill Rd., Newark, DE 19711.
