MIES plans to “stuff a bus” for hunger

Marlborough – "Stuff a Bus" is the latest community service learning project at Marlborough Intermediate Elementary School (MIES), and the beneficiaries will be the hungry of the city.

Using a bus donated for the occasion by Ryder Transportation, the school is coordinating a citywide food drive for the Marlborough Food Pantry, said Principal Susan Pikor.

The pantry provides aid to up to 700 people in Marlborough, and the summer months tend to be lean.

"Usually in the summertime we have a greater demand because the kids are home from school and they don't get the school lunches," said pantry manager Carol Phipps. "People don't donate as much because they're off on summer vacation and we don't get the school donations."

All of that makes this project a welcome one, she said.

"This will be the first time that we will be able to have a very good supply of food starting off our summer season," Phipps said. "We're very excited about this food drive."

Anyone can drop off donations at MIES. Residents are encouraged to donate non-perishable food and personal hygiene products in an attempt to fill the bus during the week of Monday June 2 to Friday June 6.

Then the bus will be parked at the school, staffed by volunteers, to take in more donations. The schedule is: Friday June 6, 8:30 a.m. to noon; Saturday June 7, 10 a.m. to noon; Sunday June 8,1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; and Monday June 9, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Special activities are planned for the weekend, and Pikor plans to attend with her two standard poodles, Chrissy-Ann and Samantha.

According to Phipps, the project is attracting plenty of attention at a time when the food pantry needs help.

"Most people think of us at the holidays and forget that we're hear year round," she said. "Having this 'Stuff a bus' is going to actually help us get through this summer period."
