Owner's name: John Couture
Address: 96 Holman St., Shrewsbury
Phone number: 508-845-9919
Business description: Cooch and Sons is a plastering contractor. "We install blue board," owner John Couture said. "In layman's terms, I put walls and ceilings up on studs and then skim coat with plaster to create a smooth surface."

Couture said he works with both homeowners and general contractors on both new and old construction. About 90 percent of his jobs are additions, remodeling, new homes and some commercial work.

"We come in after all of the other work is done and are the last step before the trim and paint go on." Business background: "I was first taught to plaster by my uncle in the summer of 1987. I was working part-time with my uncle during college and I just enjoyed troweling the plaster down until you see a nice smooth surface. I thought it was sharp. And 20-something years later I am still enjoying it.

"It is definitely an art form it takes time and years of practice. Most of my business has come from word of mouth, I have never really done any advertising." What makes his business stand out? "I am very conscious of cleanliness. I seal everything off with plastic and cover surfaces and floors with felt paper."

In addition, Couture strives for perfection in every job. "I consider myself one of the better ones in the industry," he said. Future plans: A native of Shrewsbury, Couture, who occasionally takes the oldest of his four children with him to jobs in the summer, is hopeful that one of his children will one day take over the business.

He also hopes to expand his business in both the residential and commercial markets.
