Sister Viola Gautreau, SSA

Marlborough – Sister Viola Gautreau, 91, a Sister of St. Anne, known in religion as Sister Marie Viola, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 at Marie Esther Health Center in Marlborough. She was in her 63rd year of religious life.

She is survived by her sisters, Sr. Lilian Gautreau, SSA; Sr. Noella Gautreau, SSA; and Helen Baribeau, and her brothers, Hervey and his wife and Normand and his wife. She also leaves her sistersin law, Marian Gautreau and Jean Gautreau, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The daughter of Frederick and Marie Rose (Cormier) Gautreau, she completed her elementary and high school education at St. John the Baptist School in Lynn and held a B.A. from Anna Maria College.

Sister Gautreau entered the Novitiate of the Sisters of St. Anne in Lachine Quebec in 1943 and pronounced her religious vows in 1945. She began her teaching career in St. Joseph School, Cohoes, N.Y., and also taught at Notre Dame du Mt. Carmel, Ware; St. John the Baptist in Lynn and Ludlow; St. Anne Montessori, Marlborough; and St. Matthew in Central Falls, R.I. She also worked in food service in a few community convents.

The funeral mass was celebrated Aug. 28 from the Convent chapel with burial at Saint Mary Cemetery of Marlborough. The Fitzgerald & Collins Funeral Home of Marlborough directed arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anne Retirement Fund or to a charity of one's choice.
