Solar heating units on display at Heritage Festival

Marlborough – With the annual Heritage Festival only a week away, Marlborough resident Amy Beaudet is putting finishing touches on a solar demonstration for the "Green Marlborough" display. Beaudet, one of many energy and environmentally concerned residents, was raised in Marlborough and returned to the city last year.

"It was at the Heritage Festival last year where I first found out about [the environmental group] 'Green Marlborough,'" she said.

As a solar enthusiast and expert, Beaudet said it seemed appropriate to help promote alternative energy and other Green Marlborough ideas at this year's festival.

"It is a great opportunity to show a large number of people how effective other energy sources, like solar heating, are," Beaudet said.

She applauded Green Marlborough for several of its local practical energy and conservation campaigns. Many organizations think up these large-scale ideas and then they do not make them happen, she said.

In addition to displaying a solar-powered oven and various solar-powered heating units, Beaudet said, she will have lots of information to give residents about the benefits and cost savings of using solar power. A large solar heater, she explained, retails for about $1,800 and can supply at least 50 percent of the heating needs in a 700-square-foot area.

Beaudet, who by profession is a solar thermal heating expert, explained that once the initial investment is returned through savings on heating cost, the system generates heat for free.

"It was a no brainer … Solar has always made so much sense to me," she said. "It was a technology that needed a champion … I like being the champion of the underdog."

Beaudet will be one of the many local residents volunteering their time to assist in the Heritage Festival, which has become a very popular fall event. Rain or shine, the festival shuts down Main Street Sunday Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As a communitycentered event, the festival offers a rich assortment of activities for all ages, including chowder tasting, road races, vendors and entertainment.
