Northborough teen running her first marathon to fight cancer

Northborough – Catherine Kenney of Northborough will be running her first marathon Sunday Oct. 19 at the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco, Cal. Kenney is raising money for the Massachusetts Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, with its Team in Training program.

She is the youngest member of the team training to run a marathon, but said this does not intimidate her.

"Cancer is a horrible disease and we all have people in our lives who are suff ering," she said. "Doing my part to help find a cure makes the running worthwhile, and with the funds I raise we can all make a diff erence."

Kenney, now a freshman at Bryant University in Rhode Island, wakes up at 6:30 a.m. every Saturday to drive to Grafton to train for the event.

Currently, Kenney is halfway to meeting her goal of raising nearly $4,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She has off ered to write or pin the names of anyone who is suff ering or has suff ered from cancer on her clothing during the race.

To support Kenney in meeting her goal, individuals can donate money directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society by going to her website at http://pages.teamintraining. org/ma/nikesf08/ckenney – or go to the Team in Training website at http://www.teamintraining.org/ donate/ and search for Catherine Kenney.
