Laverne S. Ferris, 98,

Fayville – Laverne S. "Lady" (Powers) Ferris, 98, a longtime resident of Fayville, died Wednesday Oct. 22, 2008, at Mary Ann Morse Nursing Home in Natick. She was the wife of the late Thomas H. Ferris, who passed away in 1990.

She is survived by her children, Thomas Ferris Jr., and his wife, Sandra; Elizabeth "Becky" Patterson; and Martha Marsette and her husband, Bruce; as well as her sister, Dorothy Collins; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Ferris earned her bachelor's degree at Boston University, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta. She started her teaching career in the Southborough Public Schools and moved on to the Sudbury Public Schools, where she was a remedial reading specialist for over 25 years.

She was instrumental in starting the Southborough Recreation Department, and was the founder of the Southborough Woman's Club Scholarship and an active member of the club. She was a volunteer at Westborough State Hospital and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of Southborough, as well as a member of the Massachusetts State Federation, Past President's Club of Woman's Clubs of Massachusetts, the Bernadettes, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Southborough.

A funeral service was held Oct. 27 from St. Mark's Episcopal Church, with burial at the Rural Cemetery in Southborough. The Morris Funeral Home directed arrangements. Expressions of sympathy may be sent in her memory to the Friends of the Southborough Library, 25 Main St., Southborough, MA 01772.
