5K race to benefit local homeless veterans

Shrewsbury – On Sunday Nov. 2 at 1 p.m., the fourth annual Veterans Memorial 5K Road Race and Walk will be held in Shrewsbury to raise funds for the Central Mass. Veterans' Homeless Shelter in Worcester.

"This is a great opportunity to do something healthy and, at the same time, help a great program in Worcester that serves veterans from all over Massachusetts," race director Patrick Collins said. "Last year, over 300 people participated, and it was a great race. Anyone who likes to run or walk should join us on Nov. 2."

The event, which is cosponsored by the Karyn Polito Golf Tournament and the Shrewsbury Federal Credit Union, will be held at Sherwood Middle School, 30 Sherwood Avenue, in Shrewsbury. Registration is from 10 a.m. to noon. The cost is $20 dollars for day-ofrace registration and $10 for veterans. A salute to veterans will be held at 12:45 p.m. There will also be a short Kids Fun Run preceding the 5K.

The Central Mass. Veterans' Homeless Shelter provides veterans with a safe place to live, the tools to help them rebuild their lives and a food bank to help their families. Additional services for veterans in need include supportive housing, employment training and medical services.

Registration forms are available at the Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation Department at Town Hall and at www. massveterans.org.
