Westborough scout Samuel Bryan named Eagle

Westborough – The highest rank that can be awarded to members of the Boy Scouts of America is that of Eagle Scout. On July 18, Samuel D. Bryan of Troop 4 in Westborough was honored as an Eagle Scout.

To be considered for Eagle rank, a scout must earn 21 merit badges, must hold a position of responsibility within the troop and must complete an Eagle Scout service project. Samuel earned 33 merit badges and held several leadership positions, including troop guide, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader within Troop 4.

For his Eagle project, Samuel chose to work with the Westborough Community Land Trust (WCLT) mapping six areas of the Charm Bracelet trails, approximately 16 miles, using Global Positioning Systems to identify areas. The data was presented to the WCLT in electronic form and provides them with a database that coordinates the Geographic Information System data of the trail locations and their maintenance needs.

Samuel and his 20 volunteers spent 118 hours on the project, which will assist the WCLT with their planning and determining operational needs for the trails.

Samuel was a member of the Class of 2009 at Westborough High School and has been a member of the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams. He participated in Model United Nations.

He will attend Westfield State College in the fall. Samuel is the son of Tom and Karin Bryan.
