Duck auction to raise money for playgrounds

Shrewsbury – Designer ducks will be up for auction during the Spirit of Shrewsbury Expo, with proceeds going to help pay for playground upkeep.

“We’re getting some town officials and local groups and businesses in town to decorate a rubber duck,” said Angela Snell, director of parks, recreation and cemeteries. “The money we raise is going to go to local playground maintenance and also build a little community spirit.”

The dressed-up ducks will be available for silent auction bids at the department’s booth from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday Sept. 26 at the expo, to be held at Oak Middle School. Among those who are decorating ducks for the auction are State Rep. Karyn Polito, R-Shrewsbury; Town Manager Daniel Morgado; the Board of Selectmen; the School Committee; the Police and Fire departments; SELCO; and Central One Credit Union. Bounce Fitness is adding a gift certificate for one of their classes, Snell said.

The designer of the duck that draws the highest bid will get a certificate, Snell said, to add a little competition for the duck couture designers. The ducks will be awarded to the highest bidders at the end of the exposition, she said.

“[The library] just turned theirs in,” she said. “Theirs has the ‘Make Way for Ducklings’ theme.”

The idea for the “Duck-o-rate” project came as she and a friend were talking after a long meeting, Snell said. From there, it just grew.

“It’s been fun getting the diff erent groups involved,” Snell said. “We’re hoping to have around 50 [ducks]. Whatever I raise will be much appreciated and go right into replacing some swings and keeping the playgrounds in town tuned up.”
