Janice Marie McCurdy, 65

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Dr. David E. McCurdy; her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Mark McCurdy, and granddaughters Catherine and Grace Mc- Curdy; her son-in-law, Scott Weaver, and grandchildren Jessica and Doug Weaver; and her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley R. Maliszewski. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon McCurdy Weaver, who passed away from breast cancer in 2005, and her sister, Cynthia Collins.

Born and raised in Harrison Township, Penn., the daughter of the late Stanley J. Maliszewski and Sabina Szcepanski, she was a 1962 graduate of Har-Brack High School in Brackenridge, Penn. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Cum Laude, with emphasis in secondary education – mathematics from Trenton State College, N.J. in 1976.

Mrs. McCurdy was a Northborough resident since 1979 and taught high school mathematics in Lawrenceville, N.J.; Tahanto Regional High School in Boylston; and Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) in Northborough. She received the teacher of the year award in 2003.

She was the tennis coach of the girl’s tennis teams at Lawrenceville, N.J. for several years and at ARHS during her tenure there. She retired from Algonquin in 2007 after 25 years of service. Following retirement, she continued to coach the ARHS girl’s tennis team and completed the 2009 tennis season, winning the Division I State Championship. She was inducted into the ARHS Athletic Hall of Fame Nov. 26, 2009.

Mrs. McCurdy was a loving person who had a passion for life, teaching, friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She was an avid outdoors person who loved the ocean and enjoyed scuba diving, kayaking and hiking. She was an active member of the St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Northborough.

A funeral Mass was held Dec. 18 from St. Rose of Lima Church, with burial at Howard Street Cemetery. Hays Funeral Home of Northborough assisted with arrangements.
