Assabet Valley sports new spring team
Marlborough – For the first time in history, Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School is competing in the spring boys volleyball circuit, the latest sports offering to be added at the school. The team was championed by the school’s girls volleyball coach Jerry Encarnacion and he was named its coach too.
“We’ve had a lot of interest in the last few years, so we took it to our School Committee and they agreed that it would be appropriate to offer yet another after-school sport to our lineup,”Encarnacion said, the girls’ volleyball coach, was hired to coach the boys as well, and has done a fabulous job of getting these kids ready to compete. Athletic Director Terry Riley praised Encarnacion’s ability to get the team ready. “Some of them [the team members] have never played an organized team sport before, and yet we are already competitive,” Riley said.
Encarnacion was a member of the Marlborough High School state finalist volleyball team in 2002.
The team lost its first match to Worcester Tech, 0-3, but came right back and defeated Montachusett Tech, 3-0. The third match was against Blackstone Valley, generally considered to be a powerhouse, but the boys forced the match to five games, and lost the final match, 15-17 (games must be won by two points).
Encarnacion is excited about the way the season has started, particularly the showing against Blackstone Valley. “It doesn’t get any closer than that. I’m so proud of this team and how hard they’re playing; I know we’ll be even better as we get further into the season. Get that ball to K-Rod (Kevin Boucher) and he’ll put it away.”
