Tufts opens Farm Field to registered users

Region – The Tufts Farm Field at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine on Westborough Road in Grafton opened its gates to registered users July 17.

The Farm Field was closed in June after reported incidents of aggressive behavior by unleashed dogs. According to Tom Keppeler, associate director of Public Relations, the behavior included attacks on people and animals, as well as dogs running in front of active farm equipment. The 37-acre parcel is used to grow hay for feeding livestock and is not a dedicated dog park.

Registration started July 17 and 18 in the parking lot of the Loew Education Center. Weekend registration continued July 24 and July 25 at the same location. Weekday registration will take place at the Campus Police, located in the center of the Grafton campus, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Along with their pets, dog owners are required to bring a government-issued photo identification for themselves, proof of rabies vaccination for the dog, proof of town registration of the dog, and a completed Farm Field Registration Form. The form is available at the registration sites or online at http://vet.tufts.edu/farm_field.

The registration form includes contact information, a brief survey about the dog, a liability waiver, and a copy of the Farm Field rules.

Registration is free for Grafton and Westborough residents. There is a fee of $15 for those from other towns.

After registering, dog owners will be provided a small blue dog tag for their pet. According to the registration form, “disregard of rules will result in citation, suspension or removal of field privileges.”

The field is open for use from sunrise to sunset. It will be closed to the public at any time that farm equipment is in use.

Keppeler reported that plans are underway to add a fenced area for freely roaming dogs. He’s hoping that will happen before the end of the summer.
