Northborough – The Northborough Rotary Club the Applefest Committee and the residents of the town of Northborough recently congratulated Northborough resident Liz Nolan for being named the 2010 Applefest Grand Marshal.

Four years ago, Liz and her husband, Scott, chose Northborough as the town in which they wanted to raise their two sons, Derick and Carter. Liz brought with her the motivation and desire to make Northborough home. Even before they packed up and moved from their home in New York, she was reaching out to other “at-home moms” via the Internet. Once in Northborough, she continued her search for parents interested in networking and socializing. Creating the Northborough Moms & Tots group, Liz has worked tirelessly to make sure that every child and mother feels welcome in the program.

Elizabeth Almeida summed it up best, as she wrote in her nomination letter:

“When my family moved to Northborough, I immediately sought a moms club to connect with other families, make new friends, and find referrals for doctors, etc. To my delight, I discovered the Northborough Moms & Tots, a group of 200- plus families that communicate primarily through a Yahoo Group, exchanging information, babysitting, play dates, baby gear, and support. As a new member, I discovered that Liz Nolan was the founder and glue that holds the group together.”

When notified that she had been selected as the Applefest Grand Marshal, Nolan was both surprised and honored.

“I am just one of many in our group trying to make a diff erence,” she said.

As the creator and founder of Moms & Tots, Liz is the driving force behind the group’s activities.

The Northborough Moms & Tots group is more than a social network. Through Liz’s leadership, the organization has expanded its efforts to include community service projects. Their largest project is the “Backpack Drive,” which provides backpacks filled with school supplies to needy students in Northborough. Other projects include Adopt-a-Family for the holidays; a winter coat/snowpant drive and Easter cookie tray sales this past spring.

Liz is pleased to see the group grow as it has.

“It’s rewarding to see it grow so much,” she said.
