Hudson – Amid a flurry of photographs and with approximately 20 friends and family members looking on, the Board of Selectmen congratulated the Hudson Hawks Eighth Grade Boys Traveling Basketball Team on its championship season at the board's March 14 meeting. In a proclamation read to the audience, the board noted that the young Hawks, who were seeded second in the Division II Central Massachusetts Championships, went on to defeat Nashoba, Oakmont and Littleton to win the tournament.
The selectmen noted that the boys had finished second in the Central Massachusetts Youth Basketball League, North Division, with an overall record of nine wins and only two losses. In the league finals played March 6 at the Fowler Middle School in Maynard, Hudson beat Littleton, 34-27.
The team, the board noted in its proclamation, was the “beneficiary of the inspired leadership of head coach Rick Karlson, who has coached the team for the past eight years, and assistant coach Mark Sullivan.” The coaches, “have promised to not only repeat this year's championship next year, but to go undefeated in the upcoming state tournament,” the board added.
The proclamation went on to state that, “We, the Board of Selectmen of the town of Hudson do hereby express our most enthusiastic congratulations to coaches Karlson and Sullivan, and the entire Hudson Boys Eighth Grade Traveling Basketball Team for their accomplishments on the court as athletes and winners, and off the court as examples of hardworking, committed, teamwork oriented young adults.”
Players on the roster included Sean Biddescombe, Luke Chiasson, Joey Durant, Liam Haley, Erik Karlson, Morgan McSweeney, Lucas Medeiros, Ben Palantino, Kyle Sullivan and Mike Tavares.
In other business, the board gave unanimous approval of live entertainment licenses to the Park Commission/Recreation Department for the Wood Park Concert Series running from June 8 to Aug. 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the Cellucci Park Pavilion Lunchtime Concert Series June 16, July 21 and Aug. 18 from noon to 1 p.m.
The selectmen also unanimously approved a lease agreement with AT&T extending the term of its occupancy of the Crestview Water Tank location through 2025. They also approved a change of wording in the plan reference on page two of the Order of Taking as voted during the February 28 meeting to: “Plan of easement acquired by the town of Hudson from Bonazzoli Family Trust at 173 Washington Street as widened and altered.”
