Cause of Westborough fire still under investigation

By Bonnie Adams, Government Editor

Firefighters battle a blaze at the Park Village West apartments on Feb. 21.

Westborough – The cause of a four-alarm fire that destroyed four East Main Street apartment units yesterday afternoon is still under investigation, according to Lt. Kevin Farrar of the Westborough Fire Dept.

Approximately 10 a.m. yesterday, a fire started in a third floor unit of the Park Village West apartments, located at 135 East Main St. and quickly spread to the attic. There were no sprinkler systems in the building, according to Farrar.

“They did not meet the criteria for needing them,” he said.

Crews from nine local towns – Ashland, Berlin, Grafton, Hudson, Marlborough, Northborough, Shrewsbury, Southborough, and Upton – responded to help Westborough firefighters battle the blaze.

“Boylston covered for us during the fire,” Farrar added.

Two firefighters and one maintenance worker sustained minor injuries; all have been treated and released from the hospital, he said.
