Sh Mansions Wolfcrest

Researcher Lyn Lincourt stands in front of one of the few remaining buildings from the largest estate in Shrewsbury known as Ard-na-Clachen. Now owned by UMass Medical School, the Stoddard House, as it was known, was built for Helen Hutchins, daughter of the president of the Crompton & Knowles Loom Works. Photo/Joyce DeWallace
The Manor House at St. John's was built by Worcester industrialist Charles Hutchens for his son, Arthur, on the 365-acre estate known as Ard-na-Clachen, which means village on the hill in Scottish. The original 30-room mansion was torn down in 1974. In 1899, industrial magnate Philip Washburn Moen built a 30-room mansion on a large tract of land between Maple Avenue and West Main Street. All that remains of the original Ard-na-Clachen estate is one stone building surrounded by the town's soccer fields. Photo/Joyce DeWallace
The Hobbs Estate was built in 1911 by Warren Hobbs, a successful Boston wool merchant. This property off Old Grafton Street originally had three homes. The land surrounding the mansion has been subdivided, but the original house still stands as a testament to the glory days of the industrial era. Photo/Joyce DeWallace
Arguably the most well-known mansion in Shrewsbury, the Hebert Candy Mansion was originally the 1900s home of a Boston wool merchant, who also had a farm on the property. It was built from the many rocks that were removed from the land and had over 20 rooms. Photo/Joyce DeWallace
Wolfcrest, as it is now known, is hidden behind a large hedge on the corner of Oak Street and Gale Avenue. Built in 1911 for the Kenney family, the 23-room manor has had only two owners. In 1942, Harry Wolf, the general manager of Denholms Department Store, purchased the house for his growing family. In addition to the large home, the property boasts a greenhouse, a tool shed, a large free-standing garage and another building that was used as a clubhouse for players using the tennis courts.
