New fire station needs voter support

Westborough – Although residents at the recent Special Town Meeting approved a debt exclusion to go forward with funding the construction of a new fire station, the request must now go before voters at a special election May 15 in order for the project to proceed.
With the cost of a new station estimated at an additional $122 per single-family household in the first year alone, tight economic times might mean that the town will find it difficult to get approval for the new building despite the inadequacies of the current station.
In an effort to provide more information about the need for a new station, the Fire Department will host two day-long open houses – May 5 and 12 – for residents to visit the current fire station and evaluate its condition for themselves.
