Wiiliam J. Whalen, 81

Westborough – William J. Whalen, 81, of Westborough, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the UMass/Memorial Healthcare- University Hospital in Worcester. He was the husband of Lois Greene Whalen.

Born in Waltham, he was the son of the late John and Helena (Laughman) Whalen. He was a graduate of Waltham High School and attended Heavy Equipment Engine School in Ft. Belvoir, VA.

Bill served six years with the Massachusetts National Guard attaining the rank of Sergeant. He also served for two years with the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Corporal.

He was employed as a construction supervisor for several local companies and was also a self -employed contractor.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Catherine Gunnulfsen and her husband, Peter, and their children, Nathaniel and Lyndsey of Lowell; one son, Glenn Whalen and his wife, Nicole, and their children, Sydney and Peyton of Illinois; one brother, Charles Whalen and his wife, Madeline, of Waltham; one sister, Mary Canavan of Pembroke Pines, FL and many nieces and nephews.

He was the father of the late William Whalen, Jr. and brother of the late Rita Centola, Evelyn Lazaro and John Whalen.

His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 15, at 10:30 A.M. in St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St., Westborough. Burial in the VA National Cemetery, Bourne, will be private.

Calling hours at the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough, are Monday, May 14, from 4 to 7 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 350 Plantation St., Worcester, MA 01604.
