Algonquin athlete selected to play in ‘Lacrosse Classic’

Southborough Open Land Foundation offers butterfly walk

Southborough – The Southborough Open Land Foundation (SOLF) invites the public to join husband and wife team, Barbara Volke and Stephen Moore, president of the Massachusetts Butterfly Club, for a butterfly walk at the Elaine and Philip Beals Preserve Sunday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event marks the second butterfly walk hosted by the SOLF.

Visitors will have the opportunity to spot a variety of butterflies, or “dancing flowers”; among them, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Viceroys, Monarch, Long-Dash Skipper or Appalachian Brown butterflies.

Shrewsbury educator strives for students to stand out

Shrewsbury – Heather Gablaski is no stranger in the halls at Sherwood Middle School in Shrewsbury, but she recently took on a new title. Gablaski, who served as the social studies curriculum coordinator for grades five through eight for several years, is now the assistant principal for grade six at Sherwood, a job that is giving her a new angle on education.

Gablaski has been with the district in various positions since 1997 and said her educational philosophy is to help all students feel challenged and engaged.

Haskell wins South Street Diner scholarship

Westborough – When Amy Haskell and the other members of the Westborough High School (WHS) Student Council had finished raking leaves for members of the community one day last fall, they were famished.

“But everyone wanted something different to eat,” she recalled. “Suddenly we knew there was one place that would satisfy everyone – the South Street Diner.”

Bob Kays, Rosemary Rimkus named ‘Good Scouts’

Marlborough/Hudson – When the biannual Good Scout Award Dinner was held June 19 at the Marlborough Courtyard by Marriott, two of the most familiar names in their communities were honored: Bob Kays, of Marlborough, and Rosemary Rimkus, of Hudson. Presented by the Boy Scouts’ Knox Trail Council, the award recognizes individuals who exhibit the characteristics of Scouting in their daily lives.

Steve Symes, co-chair of the local Good Scout committee, explained why Bob Kays is a good role model for Scouts.

Kathleen Egan named to Dean’s List at Loyola University Maryland

Baltimore, Md. – Kathleen Egan, a member of the class of 2015 from Shrewsbury, has been named to the spring 2012 Dean’s List at Loyola University Maryland. In order to qualify for the Dean’s List at Loyola, a student must have a GPA of at least 3.5 with a minimum of 15 credits.
