The C.A. six tips of the day for Aug. 30

Region – Today is Thursday, Aug. 30, the 243^rd day of 2012.

On this day in 1963, the emergency “hot line” connecting Moscow and Washington D.C. officials went into effect. Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. phone is not in the White House, but rather the Pentagon.

On this day in 1967, Thurgood Marshall became the first African American to be confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.

And on this day in 30 B.C. Cleopatra, the infamous queen of Egypt, committed suicide after her troops lost a battle to Octavian, the future first emperor of Rome.

Today’s birthdays – actress Cameron Diaz (1972), financial guru Warren Buffet (1930) and the late Red Sox star Ted Williams (1918).
