Shrewsbury – The Board of Selectmen discussed at its Oct. 9 meeting the addition of an article to the Oct. 30 Special Town Meeting (STM) warrant regarding funds for renovations at the town's public library.
Town Manager Daniel Morgado suggested that such an article would authorize the Library Trustees to spend as much as $50,000 of the approximate $250,000 the town has budgeted for library renovations on definitive schematics.
But because the STM is set for Oct. 30, the board expressed concern that there would not be sufficient time to post the suggested new article as part of the warrant.? Selectman John Lebeaux said also had concerns about creating such an article with what he felt was so little thought in such a short period of time.
The decision was made to have Morgado write the article during the board meeting so that it could be added to the warrant. The board also agreed that the voters at the STM could decide at that time what amount they wanted to approve or deny.
The article was then accepted unanimously to be included on the warrant. However, as the meeting ended, both Lebeaux and selectman Moira Miller noted that they still had major reservations regarding the article being added so quickly to the warrant. Both also noted that they might vote against approval of the article at the Oct. 23 selectmen's meeting.
