Region – Local communities are assessing damage this morning as the region recovers from Hurricane Sandy. Many homes and businesses are still without power; however, officials and residents are thankful the situation is not nearly as severe as the nor’easter that hit last year on this date. That storm, of course, left many towns without power for nearly a week.

Northborough – Sen. Harriette L. Region – Today is Tuesday, Oct. 30, the 304th day of 2012.
On this day last year the region was hit with a late October nor’easter that left many communities without power for up to a week.
On this day in 1991, the “perfect storm” hit the New England and Canadian coasts. The story of the fishing boat, the Andrea Gail, which was lost at sea in this storm, was chronicled in the best-seller, “The Perfect Storm” by Sebastian Junger.

Region – Although downgraded to a tropical storm, Sandy is continuing to wreak havoc on the region, downing trees and wires. The National Weather Service is projecting that the strongest winds will end around midnight although there will still be some residual winds and rain throughout the day tomorrow.

Region –Hurricane Sandy has strengthened over the last 12 hours and taken on a more tropical storm characteristic, according to the National Weather Service. The heaviest winds are expected between 3 p.m. and midnight tonight. Scattered power outages and downed trees have been reported already throughout the region.
