Boston Scientific to move headquarters to Marlborough

By Bonnie Adams, Government Editor

Marlborough – The city of Marlborough has scored another big business coup – Boston Scientific Corporation announced this morning that it will be consolidating its Natick and Marlborough campuses into its current Marlborough location, creating a new global headquarters.

According to a press release from the company, a new facility will be built on the existing Marlborough campus.  The consolidation will begin in the spring of 2013 and occur in stages. The move should be completed by the summer of 2014, the release said.

The existing Marlborough facility, purchased by the company is 2004, is located at 100 Scientific Way, near Interstates 290 and 495.

Mike Mahoney, the company’s president and CEO, commented on the decision.

“A new global headquarters in Marlborough will more effectively support our long-term strategic plans,” he said.  ”Consolidating our Natick and Marlborough facilities is expected to foster greater collaboration and efficiency, benefitting our employees, our customers, and, ultimately, the patients they treat.”

City officials, including Mayor Arthur Vigeant and the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation, have been aggressively contacting businesses to either locate or expand in the city.

Last spring TJX Inc. announced it had purchased two buildings formerly occupied by Fidelity Investments. The city is currently in negotiations with Quest Diagnostics that if successful, would bring potentially 1,200 jobs to Marlborough.

“The city of Marlborough is thrilled to be the new expanded home of Boston Scientific,” Vigeant said.  “The company has already been an outstanding corporate citizen and we look forward to having Boston Scientific play an even larger role in our community.”

According to its website, Boston Scientific has 25,000 employees world-wide. The press release did not state how many employees will be based at the Marlborough facility.

The company is a worldwide developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices that are used in a broad range of interventional medical specialties.
