Marlborough – Robert G. Scott, 89 of Marlborough, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham.

Born in Marlborough and a lifelong resident, he was the son of the late Oscar and Analda (Girouard) Scott. He was raised by his uncle and aunt, Frederick and Josephine (Auger) Girouard, following the death of his mother in his youth.

A graduate of St. Anthony's School and Marlborough High School, Mr. Scott received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Brown University in 1946.

As a research and development chemist, specializing in industrial dyes, he was employed by Arnold Hoffman and Co., Dighton; American Cyanamid, NJ; and Hoechst A.G. of W. Germany in W. Warwick, RI, where he was promoted to Supervisor. In 1979, he changed careers, and for the next 10 years he was employed by the Massachusetts Department of Corrections in Boston as a computer programmer and systems analyst, retiring in 1989.

Always interested in furthering his education, he continued with night courses at Framingham State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1993 and a Master's degree in Economics in 1998.

He was an active supporter of environmental and humane causes at the local and national levels, with a special focus on wildlife. He was a local historian, having prepared a comprehensive history of the former St. Mary's Parish, Marlborough; Marlborough's Postmasters; and the National Postal Service and ice harvesting activities in Marlborough and the surrounding towns. He was a benefactor of the Marlborough Historical Society and served as its president from 2000 – 2001.

He is survived by several cousins.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, Jan. 4, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the Slattery Funeral Home, 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. at St. Matthias Church, Hemenway Street in Marlborough. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Beach Street in Marlborough.
