‘Sweats for Vets’ far exceeds sweatshirt goal

Marlborough –The nonprofit Sweats for Vets recently announced that it exceeded its goal of obtaining Boston-based sports team sweatshirts. Not only did every homeless veteran affiliated with Vets Inc. of Shrewsbury get a sweatshirt – a total of 260 – but an additional 240 sweatshirts were donated to the VA hospital in Bedford.

Mark Vital is the founder of the organization.

“We had in excess of 500 sweatshirts this year,” Vital said. “There was an amazing amount of generosity this year from individuals, many who had very little to offer, but wanted to say, ‘thanks’ to a veteran.”

The greatest support came directly from local veteran organizations: The Veterans’ Council of Marlboro, The Disable Veterans, AMVETS, and the American Legion, all from Marlborough, gave generously. The VFW from Clinton also donated some sweatshirts.

“We also had some great enthusiasm from our drop-off sites this year. Julio’s Liquors of Westborough, Finnegan’s Pub of Hudson and the Italian American Club of Marlboro all ran successful campaigns to support our efforts,” he said.
