Residents ask to reverse decision on Ward Park for Senior Center

Marlborough – The City Council accepted, but otherwise did not act or comment on at its Jan. 28 meeting, a communication from a group opposed to a proposal for a new Senior Center.

Residents and landowners of the Ward Park Neighborhood Association are appealing to several city agencies and commissions to reconsider the decision to locate the new center at Ward Park. The group, led by Paul Brodeur, stated in a communication to the City Council, “We believe that the deeply divisive decision to locate public buildings on badly needed park space should only be made after broad community discussion and consent.”

New Sherwood Middle School opens

Shrewsbury – On the morning of Jan. 23, nearly 1,000 fifth- and sixth-grade students moved into their new school, the Sherwood Middle School. It was a crisp nine degrees in Shrewsbury, as a parade of bundled-up young students made the historic 50-yard march across the parking lot, from the old school to the new.

Led by a “Thank you Shrewsbury” sign, students entered the state-of-the-art building, complete with nearly 40 classrooms and 30 other rooms for learning.

Shrewsbury – For the last nine years, the Abdella Center for Ethics Lecture Series at St. John's High School has hosted a number of notable figures, including Nobel Laureate and political activist Elie Wiesel, humanitarian and the founder of “Partners in Health, Dr. Paul Farmer, and Harvard professor Michael Sandel. On Jan. 23 the school welcomed this year's honored guest, Dr. Madeleine Albright, the former U.S. secretary of state and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Coincidentally, it was also the 16th anniversary of her official swearing-in as secretary of state under President Bill Clinton.
