Algonquin Youth Wrestling team takes first place

Region – Algonquin Youth Wrestling won top honors in the Central Massachusetts Youth Wrestling League Tournament held Jan. 26 at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg.  Towns and/ or schools competing were: Algonquin (Northborough/ Southborough), Althol, Fitchburg, Littleton, Marlborough, Milford, and Quabbin.

Individual winners at the League Tournament for Algonquin were:  Drew Cozzolino, first place;  Bryce Finnegan, first place; Shea Garrand, first place; Sam Goldberg, first place; Matt Cone, second place; Joe Vencille, second place; Mark Finnegan, second place; James Mahoney, second place; and Andre Phillip, third place.

Carl Kinkel is a volunteer coach for the team.

“This is the first time the youth wrestlers have accomplished such a feat,” he said. “It speaks very highly of the program, kids, and coaches.  The Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) varsity program will benefit for years from this ‘feeder’ group.”

The other volunteer coaches are Mike Connery, George Nichols, and Tom McCauliffe.

Grades 5 – 8 throughout the state participate in the Massachusetts Youth Wrestling Association Sectionals and state meets.  Sectional individual placements will be held on Feb. 3 in Wayland.  Qualifiers will advance to the upcoming State Championship meet which will be held at ARHS Feb. 17.

The Algonquin Youth Wrestling program also invites students in grades four through eight to register for the upcoming Spring Youth Wrestling Clinic which will be held at ARHS’s wrestling room March 4 through April 11.
