Westborough – Applications are now being accepted for the Lizzi Marriott Intrepid Explorer Fund inaugural scholarship. This scholarship will provide a qualified recipient $2,000 toward his or her education in marine sciences. Interested students who are graduating from high school in 2013 or who have already graduated from high school and will be attending a qualified four-year program in Marine Sciences may obtain an application from http://www.rememberlizzi.org/uploads/application2013.pdf.

The Lizzi Marriott Intrepid Explorer Fund has been established by the Marriott family as a means to honor and celebrate the life and passion of the late Lizzi Marriott, who passed away in October 2012. It is a scholarship fund for young adults looking to embrace an education and life working in marine sciences. It is open to anyone who meets the requirements listed below; however, preference will be given to Westborough High School graduates, volunteers at the New England Aquarium and University of New Hampshire students studying marine sciences.

An applicant must meet these requirements to be eligible: currently a U.S. citizen; enrolled in an accredited four-year marine science program; maintain full-time student status for the year after the scholarship is awarded; and have a current cumulative grade average of “C” or better.

The scholarship will be awarded based on these criteria: a submitted essay that demonstrates the applicant's desire to protect oceans and educate others about the wonders of surrounding waters; current cumulative grade average; and relevant volunteer and work experience.

Applications are due by Tuesday, April 30.
