Marlborough – Esther Virginia Mary Merlini Berte recently celebrated her 90th birthday.

A resident of Marlborough her entire life, she worked in the shoe industry and then at a factory making raincoats for the Navy during World War II. Her sons Gibbie and Richard recall her saying that that she and her girlfriends would often slip notes into the pockets of those coats before they were shipped overseas.

She later became a popular hair stylist, known for her creativity and technique. ?Esther was married for 30 years to the love of her life, George, before he passed away in 1978. She was a devout member of the former St. Ann's church in Marlborough, a generous community volunteer and a fixture at Marlborough's voting polls for years. Esther is also an accomplished cellist and enjoys watching and critiquing reruns of the Lawrence Welk show.

She is devoted to her family, which includes her two sons, daughter-in-law, Gail, grandchildren Evan and Janelle and great-grandchildren, Anthony, Ava, and Kailyn.

Esther was honored at a 90th birthday celebration at the Aging Well Adult Daycare Center in Marlborough where she often participates in activities.

“She has always had a positive outlook on life and inspired people to maximize their potential and with that exudes a joyous reputation,” Richard said. “No last name needed here; just ask about Esther and you are bound to see a smile!”
