Obit John GreeneCenterville/Sarasota, Fla. – Thomas F. Greene, Jr. of Centerville and Sarasota, Florida, passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013 in his ninety-third year. Friends and neighbors fondly remember him for his gentlemanly and engaging manner. His children marveled at his energy as he played tennis, jogged and read the morning paper before most had sipped their first cup of coffee.

Mr. Greene was born in Westborough, Massachusetts and graduated from Westborough High School and Becker Junior College. In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Force and served in World War II. Stationed in England, he repaired radios for bombers that had been damaged by enemy fire. Following the war, he returned to his hometown, with his bride Sabina Dolan Greene whom he had met and married in England. After the war ended, Mr. Greene, as Veteran's Agent and Service Officer and Veteran's Housing Authority Director, helped veterans returning from the war obtain housing and other benefits.? In 1947, he was appointed probation officer for the Westborough District Court and was elevated to Chief Probation Officer in 1964. He also maintained an active real estate brokerage office until his retirement.

Although Mr. Greene and his wife were busy raising a young and growing family, he continued to serve his town in a number of posts. He was elected Town Treasurer, a position he held for 18 years. He served as Chairman of fund drives for the Red Cross, United Fund and the Boy Scouts. He was Post Commander of Stowell Parker Post # 163 American Legion and President of the St. Luke's Men's Club. He was also active in local politics and served as Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee.

In 1978, Tom and Sabina retired to Craigville Village in Centerville where the family had summered for many years. In his retirement, he enjoyed summers with his 13 grandchildren and afternoon bridge with his friends.?? He kept abreast of the latest technology, taking computer courses at the local community college and sending emails on his iPad.

Mr. Greene is survived by his six children, Maureen Martin, Westborough; Kathleen Caldera, North Easton; Thomas M. Greene, Milton, John J. Greene, Westborough; Michael R. Greene, Charlestown; and Sabina Troy, Cohasset, and 13 grandchildren.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, June 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, June 17, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Victory in Centerville, Massachusetts.
