Gerardo's Italian Bakery prepares for Sept. 1 opening

Westborough – For two decades, fans of Gerardo's Italian Bakery have flocked to the small white building located at 232 Turnpike Road (Route 9) to get their special holiday pastries, cakes and breads. As the bakery has grown over the years, so has the need for more space. The current building, nearly 100 years old, is not adequate to serve those needs, owner Gerardo Sarli knew; therefore renovations were not an option.

Floral Street Enrichment Program makes summer school fun

Shrewsbury – Many children shudder at the thought of approaching a school building in the summer. However, this impression is quite contrary to the congenial impression apparent in the Floral Street School's Summer Enrichment Program this summer. With 147 high school volunteers and an impressive number of courses offered, the program has been a big success.

According to Jean Brunell, who has overseen the program as its director for the past five years, “[the teachers] put a lot of preparation into [preparing] a high-quality class.”

Marlborough celebrates baseball attracts spectators for week of baseball tournaments

Marlborough – In spite of the stifling heat wave, hundreds of young baseball players and thousands of fans congregated in Marlborough the week of July 19-25 to play in either the Cal Ripken 11-and-under State Tournament or the 12-and-under Regional Tournament. The tournaments, played at the Williams Street Fields, were sponsored by the Marlborough Youth Baseball Association (MYBA).

According to MYBA General Manager Peter Scerra, 16 teams from six states participated in the tournaments. Scerra noted the Regional Tournament is considered “prestigious,” as the winner eventually goes on to the World Series.

The Marlborough team won the 11 U State tournament championship over Littleton, 10-9 and will next play in the Regional Tournament to be held in Warwick, R.I. In the 12 U Regional tournament, Quincy defeated Ararat Maine to advance to the World Series which will be held in Indiana.

McCombs competes in NYC triathlon

Marlborough – Mike McCombs, 56, of Marlborough, competed in the New York City Triathlon July 14, finishing third in the 55-59 age group and 155th overall out of 3,500 athletes.
