Westborough – For two decades, fans of Gerardo's Italian Bakery have flocked to the small white building located at 232 Turnpike Road (Route 9) to get their special holiday pastries, cakes and breads. As the bakery has grown over the years, so has the need for more space. The current building, nearly 100 years old, is not adequate to serve those needs, owner Gerardo Sarli knew; therefore renovations were not an option.
But the current Route 9 location is a prime spot for a business such as his. So Sarli decided to build a new bakery, right next to the old one. And this morning, the iconic building was torn down to allow for final construction to proceed on the new one which has already gone up. That new building is slated to open Sept. 1.
The new building, which will be known as Gerardo's European Bakery, is 3,500 square feet and will be a “full-fledged bakery,” Sarli said.
“We'sl be making everything on site. We'sl have all of our customers” favorites as well as some new European pastries,” he said. “The smells and tastes will be phenomenal!”
“It will be so beautiful inside, just like a bakery you might walk into in Europe,” he added.
Although there will not be in-house sit down service, customers will still be able to order takeout hot drinks with their orders.
Now that the old building is down, final construction will be going on throughout the month in anticipation of the new bakery opening on Sept. 1. In the meantime, Sarli stressed that all customer orders can be fulfilled at the company's West Boylston location.
“We want to assure our customers that we will take care of their needs until the new building is open,” he said.
