Shrewsbury School Committee supports library project

To the Editor:

Opinion-icon-for-website[1]On October 23rd the Shrewsbury School Committee voted unanimously to support the Shrewsbury Public Library building project.  Strong partnership between our public library and public schools enhances student learning.  The proposed library project will provide improved study and gathering spaces for students of all ages as well as improved technology services.  Enhanced library services and resources will provide the children of Shrewsbury with access to knowledge and learning that supplements the education that takes place in the classroom.

Our town is being asked to vote for a debt exclusion to fund this capital project.  If this vote is successful, funding for the library project will be outside of the tax levy limit, which means that it will not use funds from the town’s appropriated budget that support school and municipal needs.  In light of the ongoing fiscal issues facing our school district, we feel this is a very important factor to consider.

Successful communities provide their citizens with high levels of service.  The Shrewsbury Public Library building project will continue this tradition.  It is a fiscally responsible project that will benefit the students of our district.  A Yes vote on November 5th will allow this important project to move forward so that today’s students and future generations can continue to benefit from this important partnership.
