High school musicians invited to audition for Marlborough concert
Marlborough – The Friends of the Marlborough Public Library’s Music Chair Leslie Havens announced that auditions for the 17th annual Young People’s Performing Arts Festival Concert will be held Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Marlborough Public Library’s Bigelow Auditorium, 35 W. Main St., before a panel of three judges. This is a competition open to high school age instrumentalists in the greater Marlborough area. Up to four finalists will be chosen to perform Wednesday, May 21, at 7 p.m. in the library auditorium.
Each of the finalists will receive an award of $125 to $150, depending upon the number of finalists. Musicians who have been finalists in this competition in previous years are not eligible to compete. Individual musicians or ensembles of up to five musicians may audition for the finalist positions. Contestants must provide their own accompanists, where applicable.
Contestants should plan a recital presentation of about 15 minutes. They should be prepared to play at least a 5-10 minute representative portion of their recital piece(s) during the audition. Two copies of the music to be performed must be brought to the audition for the judges. Students will not be expected to perform their music from memory.
Contestants will be notified of the results within five days. Only two finalists per instrument or ethnic style will be chosen. At the performance May 21, each finalist will be expected to perform for about 15 minutes. Sheet music will be allowed during the performance.
Applications are available from your music director, from Leslie Havens 617-524-3775 or email@example.com or online at www.mpl-friends. Click on events and go to March 15 date. Only the first 15 qualified contestants will be invited to audition.
The concert will be the fourth concert in a series of four of the Friends 2013-2014 Yacyshyn Concert Series, named in memory of the late Martha Yacyshyn, first music chair of the Friends. This concert is funded and sponsored in part by the Ezra Cutting Trust-Bank of America Trustee; the Marlborough Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council; the Friends Memorial Fund established by an anonymous donor of $25,000; a gift from the Cummings Properties in honor of Ginger Ryan and the Brigham Family Trust.
