Letter to the editor: Celebrate National Library Week

56

Dear Editor,

During the week of April 13-19, the Marlborough and Hudson Public Libraries join libraries in communities nationwide in celebrating National Library Week, a time to highlight the value of libraries, librarians and library workers.

Marlborough Junior Woman's Club is proud of our membership in the General Federation of Women's Clubs whose work in the 1930s to found over 474 free public libraries led the American Library Association to credit women's clubs with establishing 75 percent of America's public libraries. We continue to support our local libraries so they remain trusted places where everyone in the?community can gather to reconnect and reengage with each other to enrich and shape the community and address local issues.

MJWC members know libraries today are more than repositories for books and other resources. We celebrate our area libraries being “the heart of their community” each February with a gift of chocolates.

First held in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. ?This year's theme is Lives change @ your library. We know that to be true as we see our librarians and their staff work with elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large to discover what their communities needs are and meet them. Whether through offering e-books and technology classes, materials for English-language learners, programs for job?seekers or those to support early literacy, librarians listen to the community they serve, and they respond.

Be sure to visit the Marlborough or Hudson Public Library during National Library Week and say thank you to the staff for the work they do.
