Westborough – On March 28, Sarah W. Gibbons Middle School in Westborough hosted its sixth annual Poetry Slam in the library for the eighth grade teams as an opening to the eighth-grade poetry unit. Four poets from the New England area presented a very unique, dynamic and diverse style of poetry. They each performed two of their original poems and competed against each other in a fun and upbeat style. The poets presented a range of poems from heartfelt poems, comic routines, to personal memoir pieces. The students were able to hear several different voices, judge a competition, and root for their favorites.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the poetry slam and some of their comments were “fantabulous,” “beautiful,” ?”slambuctious” and “awesome.”

The event was hosted by Alex Charalambides, managing director of Mass LEAP Collective (Literary Education and Performance), a nonprofit group responsible for the annual Louder than a Bomb Massachusetts Youth Poetry Slam Festival. It kicks off the school's poetry unit which has become the foundation for the Poetry Club and Performance Poetry Group at Westborough High School. This program was made possible by the Westborough Education Foundation.
