Shrewsbury gymnast wins in Eastern National meet

Shrewsbury – Olivia Zona, 14, of Shrewsbury recently competed in the Region 6 gymnastics competition in Springfield.?Region 6 includes all six New England states and New York. Zona competed in all four events at the regional gymnastics meet, placing second all-around including a first-place finish in the floor exercise with a score of 9.55.

Zona competes as a level 9 gymnast in the Junior Olympic program which has 10 competitive levels. Her regional performance in Springfield earned her a trip to the Eastern National gymnastics competition in Bradenton, Fla., and provided her with the opportunity to compete against the best gymnasts from 26 states across the eastern United States. Zona once again excelled at the competition where her floor routine resulted in a meet-high score of 9.525 and first place as Eastern National Junior 7 floor champion.

“I had a consistent and strong floor routine and I am honored to compete against so many talented gymnasts across the country,” Zona said following the meet.

Zona has been training and performing gymnastics since she was 3 years old. She trains locally at the Gymnastics Learning Center in Shrewsbury and is coached by Robert and Nikki McElroy.
