Shrewsbury – Cameras clicked away as Katie Knott's kindergarten class posed in their fanciest clothes on the Retelling Red Carpet at Beal Early Childhood Center in Shrewsbury June 12.
“The Retelling Red Carpet is an event held at the end of year to celebrate all of the hard work the children have done throughout the year,” Knott explained.
In the opening act, the children sang and danced to songs they learned at a school-wide sing-along. Then, the class showcased movies that the children made to retell stories.
“I think they did a wonderful job,” said Allison Hester, a parent. “It really showed how much they put together as a class.”
The kindergarten students chose four stories to retell: “Little Red Hen Makes a Cake,” “The Gingerbread Girl,” “Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza,” and “Jack and the Beanstalk.”
“I was in Jack and the Beanstalk,” said Kiera Wart. “I feel really happy. We get to dress up and watch all the movies.”
For each story, the children made lists of characters, props and settings.
“In our play, we have backgrounds and we have things on us, like ears, noses,” said Zachary Johnson. “It feels great to be in it!”
The kindergarten students also cast the characters and penned the script.
“They truly created every aspect of each play,” Knott said. “They cheered on their friends who were acting. They were so proud of the movies they created and it was evident on their little faces tonight.”
Knott filmed and edited the movies.
“I liked how Mrs. Knott was recording it, and I felt good about it,” said Juliana Phipps.
Knott provided decorations, such as balloons, backdrops, stars and the red carpet.
“Mrs. Knott and [aide] Mrs. Killay have put a tremendous amount of effort into tonight to make it so special for the kids,” parent Christine Phipps said. “They really are the
quintessential kindergarten teachers. We couldn's be happier with the year the kids have had.”
