Grafton – When fairy tale creatures invade his swamp, what’s an ogre to do?

How about team up with a talking donkey, rescue a beautiful princess from a dragon-guarded tower on behalf of a height-challenged despot and fall in love — even before discovering just why it is that she never goes out after sundown?

Welcome to “Shrek: The Musical,” which takes the stage at Grafton High School, located at 24 Providence Rd., Thursday, April 9; Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11 at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, April 12 at 2 p.m.

“We wanted something family friendly this time around,” said Meghan Patrick, a Grafton High School grad who has directed the high school’s plays since 2007. “It’s funny and it’s probably one of the most complicated shows we’ve put on.”

The show, with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, is based on the 2001 DreamWorks film “Shrek” and William Steig’s 1990 book “Shrek!”

The show stars Grafton High School seniors Jake Sandakly as Shrek, Lauren Esper as Fiona, Austin Bailey as Donkey and Teddy Kiritsy as Lord Farquad among a large cast of fairy tale creatures and knights.
