Marlborough – The highlight of the 2015 Volunteer Recognition lunch held by the Marlborough Council on Aging (COA) May 1 at the Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School was the announcement of the Volunteer of the Year – Richard “Cy” Cygan.
He was presented a certificate of recognition from Volunteer Coordinator Susan Maki which highlighted his many contributions at the local center and help to senior residents throughout the city.
According to Maki, Cygan has volunteered at the center since 2011 participating in the FISH program – driving elders to doctor’s appointments, delivering food from the food pantry to seniors, and being trained as a driver for the new eight-passenger handicapped accessible bus expected to be given to the COA this summer.
An amateur photographer since 1963, Cygan has photographed a chronological record of the new senior center from the early stages of the building process to its completion. He also assists residents at 240 Main St. senior housing, where he resides with his wife, Cathy. The Cygans enjoy maintaining the flower bed in the Liberty Hills courtyard there as another way to help the community.
Cygan was employed at Digital Equipment Corporation for 27 years.
“Cy epitomizes a selfless quality that is the essence of what volunteering is all about,” Maki said.
