West Brookfield – Adelaide (Chaves) Madeira, 97, of West Brookfield, former longtime resident of Hudson, died Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015 at Brookhaven Assisted Care in West Brookfield. She was the loving wife of the late Silvino Madeira, who died in 2000.

Adelaide was born in Hudson, daughter of the late Arthur and Carmelina (Fernandes) Chaves. She resided in Hudson for most of her life prior to moving to Brimfield to be with her niece and family. She has spent the past few years residing in West Brookfield.

Adelaide spent many years working for Marlboro Footwear in Marlborough until her retirement. She was a member of Saint Michael’s Parish in Hudson and the Ladies Sodality, and enjoyed her times as a member of the Golden Club associated through the Hudson Savings Bank, as well as her times at the Hudson Senior Center.

Adelaide cherished the past few years she spent with her niece in Brimfield and the special bond she formed her great-nephew, Luke. She was truly blessed and will be fondly remembered.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Judith (Madeira) Fay, in 1995 and is survived by her two grandchildren, Lisa Fay-Gatton and Anthony Fay, both of California, along with her two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Antonio Chaves of Yarmouth; her sister, Esther Medeiros of California; and her several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Arminda Ferreira, Ann Augusto, and Mary Klein.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Oct. 10, at 9 a.m., in Saint Michael’s Church, 21 Manning St., Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael’s Cemetery of Hudson. Family and friends may attend a calling hour Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8-8:45 a.m., prior to the Mass at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, 50 Central St., Hudson.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Adelaide may be made to the National Down Syndrome Foundation, 666 Broadway, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10012.
