Obit Aubrey GreenwaldNorthborough – Aubrey “Aub” Greenwald Jr., 88, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015 in Shrewsbury Nursing Home after a period of declining health. His wife, Helena “Nini” G. (Roche) Greenwald, died in 1995.

He leaves his three sons, Aubrey Greenwald III and wife Debra of Northborough, Neil Greenwald and wife Lisa of Boylston, and Martin Greenwald and wife Dina of Northborough; six grandchildren, Andrew Greenwald, Max Warren, Evan Greenwald, Dylan Greenwald, Riley Greenwald, and Chase Greenwald; his companion of 14 years, Maureen Lambert; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughters, Andrea Greenwald in 1977 and Karen Warren Greenwald in 2013, and a sister, Geraldine Simeone.

Born in Baltimore, Md. and raised in Worcester, he was the son of Aubrey and Elsie (Wolf) Greenwald Sr. he graduated from South High School in 1947 and Clark University in 1951 with a B.A. degree. While at Clark, he lettered in three varsity sports. He went on the play semi-pro baseball in Worcester.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Aubrey proudly served his country during WWII in Guam. He spent his 36-year career with U.S. Army – Natick Labs, retiring in 1986.

Aub’s favorite past time was sports. From the age of 17 to 80, he umpired baseball at all levels, including college. He also refereed basketball for many years, was a former manager of the YMCA of Greater Worcester Central Branch, and was the umpiring chief for Northborough Youth Baseball for over 30 years. He will be remembered by his signature umpiring call, “Strike – E – Ah.”

Aubrey enjoyed reading and traveling. We must not forget that he was an ardent N.Y. Yankees fan.

Calling hours will be held Sunday, Nov. 29, from 2-5 p.m., in Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main St., Northborough. A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m., in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Route 122 in Whitinsville.
