Obit-Flag_USE-THIS-ONE4Marlborough – George E. Fortin, 98, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 26, 2015. He was the husband of the late Mary Catherine “Kay” (Peters) Fortin, who died in 2014. He was also the husband of the late Maryann Sheehy, who died in 1976.

Born in Marlborough, he was the son of the late Horace and Exilia (Goulet) Fortin, and lived here all of his life.

Mr. Fortin was a graduate of Marlborough High School, class of 1935, and served in the United States Army in WWII in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater.  He last worked as a highway engineer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of the former St. Mary’s Church in Marlborough and a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Marlborough, where he served as both Lector and Eucharistic Minister.  He was a member of the VFW Post 638 in Marlborough, the Akroyd Houde Post 132 of the American Legion in Marlborough, and the Hudson Elks. For many years, he was a regular at the Wayside Racquet and Swim Club, where he was the first recipient and namesake of the George Fortin Fit For Life Award.

He is survived by one son, Paul Fortin of Boonville, N.Y.; three daughters, Catherine Waugh of Berlin, Maureen Martin of Lowell, and Margaret Miller and her husband Kent of Plymouth; one stepson, Robert Peck and his wife Nancy of Eastham; one stepdaughter, Barbara Peck and her husband David of Dayton, Nev.; and 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Stephen Waugh, and a stepdaughter, Eunice.

His funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 2, at 9:00 a.m., in the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlborough. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery of Marlborough. Visiting hours at the William R. Short and Son Funeral (www.shortfuneral.com), 95 West Main St., Marlborough, will be held Friday, Jan. 1, from 4-6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the Catholic Charities, 70 Lawrence St., Lowell, MA 01852.
