Westborough – Westborough High School graduate Catherine DeSai recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award for her project, Help for the Developmentally Disabled. A member of Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts, her project addressed the many ways to volunteer with and assist the mentally disabled. Her goal was to spread awareness of this global issue and to create a greater influx of volunteers for the developmentally disabled via a website she created – www.volunteer4specialneeds.wordpress.com. DeSai is in the 5 percent of high school girls who earn the award.

DeSai is currently pursuing a nursing degree at St. Anselm’s College. Throughout her high school career, she stated she has personally benefitted from volunteering in support of developmentally disabled individuals; children in foster care; and individuals challenged with hunger and poverty, while participating in varsity-level sports and holding leadership positions in clubs.

The Girl Scout Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; it recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects.
