Mary R. Snow, 94, of Grafton

47

Obit Mary SnowGrafton – Mary R. (Roche) Snow, 94, a lifelong resident of Grafton, passed peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016 at Notre Dame Long Term Care Center in Worcester. Her devoted husband of 55 years, Kenneth G. Snow, passed April 13, 1998.

The daughter of John F. and Lena E. (Boutiette) Roche, she was born Jan. 26, 1922 in Grafton into a loving, close knit family. She was predeceased by four brothers, John, William, Bernard and Lloyd Roche, and three sisters, Lillian Boucher, Hazel Birnie and Barbara Boutiette.

Mary was a proud graduate of Grafton High School, class of 1939, where she met her husband Kenny. They were married Dec. 10, 1942, one week before he was deployed to the pacific with the U.S. Navy to serve his country in World War II. They would not see each other again for three years until his discharge. They then began their married life together, settling on Worcester Street in Grafton, raising their two children and becoming involved members of the community.

Mary’s strong Roman Catholic faith was an integral part of her life. She was a parishioner of St. Philip’s Church in Grafton Center teaching CCD, singing in the choir, organizing pot luck suppers, penny sales, and ironing clergy vestments, and was an active member of the church Women’s Club. She and Ken then moved to North Grafton, joining St. Mary’s Parish where she continued her devotion by volunteering her time every week as assistant to the CCD coordinator.

Mary worked 10 years at the Grafton branch of Savers Cooperative Bank, retiring in 1984. Retirement allowed her more time to spend with her beloved family. She especially enjoyed trips to Princeton for weekly dinners with her grandchildren and never missing a birthday, sporting event or school activity for them. She looked forward to annual trips to Cape Cod, particularly fun filled days spent on Corporation Beach in Dennis.

She was a wonderful cook, with a particular fondness for baking and her Irish soda bread which was “legendary.” She also loved sewing, quilting and making beautiful pillows which she gifted to family and friends.

Mary was an avid Red Sox fan and despite a serious hearing impairment and struggle with macular degeneration, she never missed watching her team play. She was often heard to say “they always break your heart.”

She is survived by her daughter, Anne Marie Snow-Mahan of Holden; her son, Peter E. Snow and his wife Janet of North Grafton; her grandchildren, Shamus S. Mahan of Charlton and Molly E. Mahan of Cambridge; her step-grandson, Jason Louis and his wife Lindsay of Millbury; and her great-grandson, Timothy Louis. She also leaves two sisters-in-law and two generations of nieces, nephews and several cousins.

Mary’s family wishes to offer thanks to Pam McKinley and the staff of Family Tree Home Care Inc., the administration and staff at Notre Dame du Lac Assisted Living Center and Notre Dame Long Term Care Center, especially Beverly Amosah and the staff of the South Wing Section of the Care Center. Also, much gratitude as well to the Notre Dame Hospice Team for their care and compassion to Mary during her final days with them and a heartfelt thanks to Frank J. McCabe M.D., Kurtis R. Zimmerman O.D. and the dedicated staff at Reliant @ Gold Star Boulevard Ophthalmology Department.

All are invited to the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial for Mary Saturday, Feb. 13, at 12 p.m., at her Parish Church of St. Mary, 17 Waterville St. (Route 30), North Grafton. She will then be laid to rest next to her husband at Pine Grove Cemetery. In following Marys’ wishes there will be no calling hours or visitation. Funeral arrangements are in the care of The Roney Funeral Home of North Grafton.

The family suggests memorial donations to MA Eye and Ear Infirmary, 243 Charles St., Boston MA 02114, the medical facility that helped Mary retain her vision for many extra years.
