Obit John TsombakosShrewsbury – John Tsombakos, 83, of Shrewsbury, died peacefully in his home Tuesday, April 12, 2016.

John was born in Worcester, son of the late Joakim and Arthruses (Laskarake) Tsombakos. He graduated from New England College and Worcester State College, where he received his Master’s Degree in Education. He served his country proudly with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict.

John worked at the Shrewsbury High School for over 30 years teaching English and Journalism. After retirement he continued to work as a substitute teacher at Tahanto Regional Middle/High School.

In his spare time, John worked repairing sewing machines, but also enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends over coffee. He and his wife Nancy were always together, shopping, dining out, or visiting the casino.

He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy J. (McDonald) Tsombakos. He leaves his two sons, John Tsombakos of Spencer and Mark Tsombakos and his wife Lynne Flanagan of Grafton; two grandchildren, Cara and Andrew Tsombakos of Grafton; a sister, Arestea “Irene” Chakonas of New York; a nephew, Jeffrey Chakonas; and a niece, Joan Chakonas. Besides his wife, John was predeceased by a sister, Ann Kleovoulos, and a nephew, George Chakonas.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family Sunday, April 17, from 2-4 p.m., in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. Burial with military honors will take place Monday, April 18, at 10 a.m., at Mountain View Cemetery (Section NN) of Shrewsbury.
