Obit Helen J. O'BrienMarlborough – Helen J. (Donahue) O’Brien, 92, a lifelong Marlborough resident, went home to the Lord Monday, June 13, 2016, peacefully surrounded by family members.

She was the wife of the late John W. “Jack” O’Brien Sr., who died Dec. 20, 2007.They had been married for 60 years.

Born in Marlborough, she was the daughter of the late Harold and MaryJane (Scott) Donahue. Helen attended the Immaculate Conception School and graduated Marlborough High School, class of 1942.

She was employed during WWII by the former Dennison Manufacturing Company. When John returned from military service, they became engaged and married Oct. 5, 1947 at the Immaculate Conception Church.

Helen was an avid bingo player at the Elks in Hudson, and enjoyed her weekly “Bingo Friends” for many years. John and Helen looked forward to taking the family to Long Lake, Maine every summer. As empty nesters, some trips included the Fryeburg Fair in Maine and horse racing at Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Nana’s love and kindness was shown in everything she did for her family. She will be missed by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

For many years, she attended the Tuesday novenas held at the former St. Ann’s Parish in Marlborough.

She is survived by her sons, John W. O’Brien Jr. and Patrick P. O’Brien, both of Marlborough; her daughters, Kathleen M. Menefee and her husband Michael of Chester, Va., Carol A. Ahern and her husband Thomas of Shrewsbury, and Karen J. O’Brien – Hayes and her husband Patrick Jr. of Marlborough; her grandchildren, Melissa M. Margeson, Michael R.Menefee Jr., Maeve Helen Ahern, Brendan T. Ahern, Katherine M. O’Brien, John P. O’Brien, Shannon E. O’Brien, Patrick D. Hayes III, Sean W. Hayes, Kyle T. Hayes Sr., Garrett L. Hayes, Bridget Alennah-O’Brien Hayes, Aeden J. Hayes; great-grandchildren, Emma Helen Menefee and Kyle T. Hayes Jr.; and her brother, Paul Donahue of Hudson. She was also the sister of the late Harold F. Donahue Jr., Doris Mahoney, John Donahue, and William Donahue.

Visiting hours will be held Friday, June 17, from 4-7 p.m., at the Slattery Funeral Home, 40 Pleasant St., Marlborough. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 18, at 9 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect St., Marlborough.

Burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Beach Street, Marlborough.
