Shrewsbury – Kara Frankian, a first and second grade teacher at the Floral Street School, was recently named as the first recipient of the Massachusetts Environmental Education Society’s Champion of Environmental Literacy Award for her work in helping to utilize a nature trail behind the school into her students’ curriculum.

The half-mile loop of trail and boardwalk that meanders through the schoolyard’s wetland and woodland area was built over nearly two decades with the help of local Eagle Scouts and community volunteers.

Each week Frankian’s class spends time on the trail tracking changes and incorporating their findings into their studies in a variety of ways.  The students even created QR codes to present their findings to fellow students and their families during the school’s recent annual environmental celebration, Floral Goes Green.
