Westborough – The Rotary Club of Westborough, in conjunction with Sun Multisport, sponsored the seventh annual Westborough Rotary Sprint Triathlon. Over 300 athletes participated in the race, which was held Aug. 14.
The course consisted of a 0.25 mile swim in Lake Chauncy, a 14 mile bike ride through Westborough, Northborough, Marlborough and Southborough, and 3- mile run in the woods and roads around Lake Chauncy. Athletes also had the option of completing a 6-mile off-road bike course instead of the road course, or a “Splash and Dash” comprised of just the swimming and running segments.
The triathlon is one of the major annual fundraising activities for the Rotary. According to President Gerry Gross, most of the money raised goes to support a variety of local causes, most notably college scholarships for graduating high school seniors. A portion of the money is also used to support the Rotary’s international efforts, such as their fight to eradicate polio. Central One Federal Credit Union, Roche Brothers, the Westborough Swim & Tennis Club, Avidia Bank, Curry Printing and Ball Financial Services all helped to sponsor the triathlon.
Jeffrey Litchfield of Concord, N.H. was the first overall finisher among the men, with a time of 1:02:32.8. Lisbeth Kenyon of Barrington, R.I. was the first overall finisher among the women, with a time of 1:07:40.9
For the offroad course, Lori Muhr of North Grafton finished first with a time of 58:49.4 and Jon Goozey of Douglas was first among the men with a time of 53:59.1
Brian Awe of Boston, 27:02.4, and Jenny Gallagher of South Hamilton, 35:50.9, were the top male and female finishers for the Splash and Dash.
